Puerto Vallarta
Located on Mexico's Pacific Coast where the Sierra Madre Mountains meet the sea, Puerto Vallarta was a forgotten village that was catapulted to international attention in the 1960s. That's when John Huston chose it to film Night of the Iguana with Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton. Now, it's one of the crown jewels of the Mexican Riviera. Come here to enjoy excellent, full-service resorts, glorious beaches, sophisticated shopping along cobblestone streets, and a rollicking nightlife.

Golden Crescents on the Sea
Even by the high standards of Mexico's Pacific Coast, Puerto Vallarta's beaches are a step above. In town, along the Bay of Banderas, resort hotels face golden, palm-fringed sands. The beaches continue, sweeping in long crescents north and south of town with vistas of bay, beach, and mountain. As you might expect, the majority of sports activities involve sea or sand. Most resorts have facilities for sailing, windsurfing, and parasailing. Divers and snorkelers head for Los Arcos, an underwater rock formation south of town. Golf is available at several courses and most hotels have tennis courts. Horseback riding along the beach is popular, too, and some outfitters offer longer trips to mountain villages.

Shop, Dine, Dance
Shoppers have the double pleasure of finding a plethora of international brands, as well as excellent crafts from all around Mexico. Galleries specialize in true artists from Mexico and the rest of Latin America. Puerto Vallarta also boasts a remarkable range of excellent restaurants. Choose a venue with a sea view, a romantic courtyard, or a front row seat on the harbor walkway. When the sun goes down, Puerto Vallarta heats up. Many of the best discos are at hotels. Clubs offer mariachi, folklore shows, and Mexican dancing. Lavish fiestas with dinner, dancing, entertainment, and fireworks are a great option offered by some hotels.
